Student, 4, says monitor hit him
JOLIET REPORT
April 26, 2007
By BRIAN STANLEY Staff Writer
JOLIET -- A 4-year-old student says a school-bus monitor choked and hit him Monday afternoon.
The incident allegedly happened around 3:15 p.m. as the bus was taking children home from the Marycrest Early Childhood Center in Joliet, according to reports.
"The child's parents made a report at the police station Monday night," said Deputy Chief Pat Kerr.
Kerr said the boy reported that the person assigned to monitor students on the bus choked him and slapped him for being disrespectful.
The case was assigned to investigators Tuesday, and police have reviewed a videotape of the incident.
About 10 students were riding the bus at the time the boy said the monitor came over to confront him.
"It seems the ride continues normally after the monitor goes over to the student," Kerr said.
Kerr said the bus company told police Wednesday the monitor has been released from the job.
The company took handwritten statements about the incident from the bus driver and bus monitor on Tuesday.
Kerr said police have obtained copies of those statements, but declined to describe the statements because the case is "an ongoing investigation."

Now when I first heard this story, I heard it on the radio. All they said was that a 4 year old kid from Joliet was choked by his bus driver. So instantly I thought of my son. Got to work that morning and asked one of my co-workers for the paper to see if what I heard was true and what possible school this took place. So when I read the article, my mouth dropped because this is my son's autistic school!!! I was angry, scared, disappointed all at the same time. All I kept saying and thinking was this could've been my kid!!!! And to think that I put my trust in all these people that I don't know. We as parents have lots of worries as it is with all the shootings and shit, now this? WTF???
