Hello again blogger fam. I'm glad to be back. My ThanksGiving was ok, what about yours? I ate alot of turkey and don't feel bad about it.
As many of you are aware, my son had to do a second screening (which was yesterday) with 2 social workers, a speech pathologist, and a nurse. My son's father was with me, but I did 95% of the talking. They spent like the first hour asking us questions about my son's actiivities, his behavior, and how he interacts with other kids. Now keep in mind that we go into a big room where there are toys to keep him occupied while we are talking.
They ask questions, blah, blah, blah, and then they ask me does he echo his words? What do you mean by that? They say, for example, how was your day? He would say, your day. And I said yes he does that all the time. Then another question that kinda stuck with me was, does he play or do something for long periods of time. I'm like no he's pretty much a busy kid who really can't sit still. Well we kinda look over at him and one of the social workers are like, you sure cuz he's been playing with that toy for an awfully long time. I'm dumbfounded because I've never seen him do that. Then she asked if he interacts with kids and I said no because he is mostly a loner, he'd rather be off doing his own thing.
So after about an hour of questions, the speech pathologist takes him outta the room and before she did asked me does he get scared of new faces. I said no, he is a very friendly kid which scares the shit outta me. So she takes him and of course he goes with her. They both come back like 20 minutes later and gives us their report. The speech pathologist said that he did do the echoing and that he did know his first name and his age. But when she started talking to him, she got the echoing. Then she said that she put a bunch of objects in front of him and asked him what the objects were. She noticed that when she gave him the object, he would sniff it. I never seem him do that either. Out of 16, he got 15 of the objects right. But when she asked what the objects are used for, she got nothing. Then she said she noticed something with his right eye again and they suggested that I take him to an optimologist. So her theory is that yes he is speeched delayed but it's just he doesn't know how to use the words he knows to complete a sentence. If you tell him to say a word, he can say the word as clear as day, but putting it to use is his problem.
So then they ask a few more questions and they all leave the room to put all the info into a computer.
The come back to tell me that he is a canidate for......
AUTISM!!!!
My mouth just dropped. I mean sure I knew there was a problem that needed attention but seriously I was going towards ADHD, but hey I'm not a professional. I didn't get upset because they are only here to help. But I did get overwhelmed at all the information they were throwing at me!!! We were there for almost 3 hours, and he was cranky as hell. Well I dropped him and his dad off cuz I had to register him for the new school (he also got accepted for that yesterday, WOO HOO). The counselor noticed I was drained and she tried to get everything done as quick as possible. I told her about the Autism and she said that he will be fine cuz he's in the right place now. After about an hour, she hugged me and told me to go home and relax cuz I was drained!!!
I have sooooo much literature to read it's not even funny. So I'm gonna end this, I just wanted to inform my fam.
Peace...
